Improve communication in classes: steps to follow

Giving and taking feedback

To improve communication in classes, giving and taking feedback is very helpful. Feedback doesn’t mean teachers giving suggestions and advice to the learners but also learners suggesting to teachers how the classes and teaching are beneficial to them. In this way, teachers and students can communicate with one another better.

And both teaching and learning will be improved this way. By using ERP software, teachers should conduct activities where students can participate and share their thoughts and views. Later, teachers can add more to their existing knowledge and can give constructive feedback for improvement. Also, surveys and classes can be conducted to take feedback from the learners about how effective teaching patterns are for them.

Develop a positive environment

Students often feel that communication only means giving the right answers in the class or they can only speak when they have the right knowledge. Also, many students have the fear that if they say something incorrect, they will be judged, criticized, scolded by the teachers, or others will laugh at them.

To overcome this problem and enhance communication in classes, teachers should focus on creating a safe and positive environment where students can interact and speak freely without having fear. Also, in a class, there are different types of students. Few are active speakers whereas some feel shy and conservative. Therefore teachers should motivate and encourage all to speak and share their thoughts and views with others in the class.

Conduct interactive activities

Only teachers speaking, lecturing and students simply listening is not effective for communication and learning therefore teachers must conduct interactive activities for the learners. Some of the examples for these activities are group discussions, turn-by-turn reading of lessons and notes, recitations, debates, and question-answer rounds. Teachers can conduct these activities in the classes to ensure that students are getting the opportunity to interact and communicate with one another.

Focus on active listening

Communication involves both speaking and listening. Without listening to the speaker attentively, we can not give the right response, feedback and revert the message to the speaker. Therefore active listening is very important. Teachers should ensure that students are listening to them carefully in the classes. This will improve their participation and communication. Also, teachers should listen to the messages, problems, and other things shared by the learners to guide the best. This helps in achieving effective two-way communication between teachers and learners.
