Things to Consider Before Designing Your Romance Book Cover

Romance Book Cover

One of the most important factors on whether or not readers want to pick up your book is your book cover. It has the power to both attract new readers as well as repel them away as well. So today, I’m going to give you the top 6 steps you need to consider for a best-selling romance book cover. (Valium)

Having a book cover that sells means having a romance book cover that is eye-catching, original, and screams what your book is about. Now, what exactly does that entail? The things that should be included in your book cover and really thinking about what it is that causes someone to pick up a book and look at the blur.

Because though there is the saying, don’t judge a book by its cover. I think we’re all pretty aware that, in reality, people do judge a book by its cover. So you need an eye-catching book cover in order to stop someone’s attention long enough for them to want to learn more about the book.

What you should and shouldn’t do- Romance Book Cover

Sometimes you may be tempted to be super original with your cover or do something super fancy, but if you do that, then it won’t technically match that genre of the book, so make sure you keep to the genre. That way, someone knows what to expect when they pick up your book, which is extremely important.

Another thing to keep in mind is working with text. Now I find the one thing that really sets professional covers apart from amateur covers is how the text is handled. A lot of the time, when you see professional book covers, you’ll notice that different things are done to the text.

Whether texture is added or the text maybe has been customized to add a tale or something to a letter to make it more elegant looking.

When you’re a graphic designer, you learn pretty quickly that you shouldn’t treat text as text. You need to treat your text as imagery and use that to help design something. Some covers are extremely text-based in the fact that that is basically all they showcase.

There’s not so much going on in the background of the design, but the design is the text itself, and that’s the focal point. If you want professional help, then you can hire a romance book cover designer.

The cover’s aesthetics

Another thing you want to do is to create pop. Now that’s really what a lot of authors ask for. They just know they want their cover to pop. Now, what exactly does that mean? It can mean a lot of different things, but usually, it comes down to contrast. And what I mean by contrast is that the design is not muted.

Whether that be the design is all blue or the design is all purple. Having contrast means that there is, of course, contrast, whether that be black and white, or if you do have a design where it’s all blue-tinted. That design has the contrast between the tones of blue. Either way, if a cover has good contrast.

If you look at it from far away, you’re still able to see the overall image. And it really does pop if a cover doesn’t have good contrast. When you look at it from far away, it kind of blurs into itself. Another good thing to try is looking at your cover in a black and white version because black and white will really reveal whether or not your cover has good contrast.

If it’s all kinds of different shades of gray, it means that your cover doesn’t have good contrast. Last but not least, make sure that your cover is clean and professional-looking, and sometimes by that, I mean less is more.

Make a relevant cover

Your cover should look like everybody else is covered within your sub-genre. This is not the time to stand out. This is the time to fit in because it tells the reader at a subconscious or unconscious level that they are looking at the right book when they have read through a tonne of different books of the same genre with similar covers.

Keep up with the trends

Now the second thing you need to think about is trends. So what’s trending within that particular sub-genre and heat level? Try to follow the hottest trend to ensure that you engage the largest audience possible.

Trends become popular for a reason, so it is only logical to adopt whatever the hottest thing is.

Choosing the images

he third thing you need to consider is the images you will use. So you have two choices. You can use stock images, or you can have a custom photoshoot done. Now stock images are vastly less expensive, and those can range in price from, say, $70 for a photo.

The second is you can buy a premade cover that already has a photo that comes with it. And that’s sometimes less expensive. It depends on how nice the cover is. Quite honestly, some of them are $50, and some of them are $300 for a pre-made cover.

Choosing the aesthetic

The next thing that you need to think about when you think about branding is what fonts you are going to use. Things like colors and also the general look and feel. Do you have a general dark feel, alight feel, happy field? And also the placement of the text.

So if you are always putting your name at the top, always put your name at the top of covers. If you’re always putting your name at the bottom and center, then always put your name at the bottom and center.

Making the thumbnail

Make sure the thumbnail is friendly. Sometimes what I see is people are just trying to put way too much information on book covers. And this was something more popular in the 90s where you put a blurb on there.

So also think about what’s going to look good, and sometimes that’s maybe just one image, or that’s why people just put a guy on the cover or girl on the cover, and they don’t try to put a tonne of other things.

Update your covers

A lot of people go back, and they update covers as time goes on to ensure that their books are still relevant and still something that people would want to click on. So try to put the extra effort into periodically updating your book’s cover to keep it fresh and new to the readers.

In summary, the first thing you need to think about is to make sure you know your subgenre and your heat level so that you can look like everybody else.

The second thing is to think about trends and what is trending within the last year among the best sellers in that particular area.

The third thing is to think about your photos in your images. Fourth is branding to make sure you have the same look and feel across all of your books. The fifth one is to think about thumbnails. And the last is about updating the covers of your book to keep up its relevancy.
